The design of this coin was selected in a national competition. The obverse depicts Sacagawea, a young Shoshone, by artist Glenna Goodacre. Sacagawea carries on her back, Jean Baptiste, her infant son. Sacagawea was an interpreter and guide for Louis and Clark during their journey westward. The reverse shows an eagle in flight designed by Thomas D. Rogers Sr.

The coin weight is 8.1 grams plain edge. Made on a pure copper core with the outer layers manganese brass. This gives the coin a distinctive golden color.

Key to abbreviations used on this page:

BU (Brilliant Uncirculated): A strictly uncirculated coin with attractive mint luster but noticeable detracting contact marks or minor blemishes.

Proof: Specially prepared planchets using highly polished dies. They are struck multiple times at low speed and are made expressly for collectors in Proof Sets. Modern Proof coins are easily identified by their mirror-like finish and frosted features.
