Information about Proof Sets:

Proof Editions: The term "Proof" refers to a method of manufacture which produces a superior quality coin. Proofs are struck on specially prepared planchets using highly polished dies. They are struck multiple times at low speed and are made expressly for collectors in Proof Sets. Modern Proof coins are easily identified by their mirror-like finish and frosted features. Proof Singles are individual coins taken from Proof Sets and are highly sought after by collectors.

The Packaging of proof sets varies from year to year. The earliest sets were sold in individual thin plastic baggies, stapled together, packed in small boxes offering little protection. Starting in 1955, Proof Sets were packaged together in a thin cellophane enclosure inside of a manila envelope. In 1968, when the Proof production was moved to San Francisco, the sets were hermetically sealed in hard plastic cases inside of a colorful outer box. This later type of packaging has changed in color and in size several times to date.

Proof sets contain five coins: cent, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar. There are three notable exceptions: the 1942 set was available with two nickels; sets from 1973 through 1981 which included a dollar coin; and the 1999 proof sets will contain nine coins: cent, nickel, dime, 5 statehood quarters, and a half dollar. Beginning with the 2000 proof sets a tenth coin was added the Sacagawea dollar.

All proof coins are sold by the U.S. Mint at a premium above their face value. Prior to 1937, proof edition coins were sold individually. In 1936 if all five coins were ordered, the Mint shipped them as a set. The next year, 1937, was the first time collectors were able to order what we now know as a "proof set". All proofs coins prior to 1968 were struck in Philadelphia. Proof sets were produced every year from 1936 to 1942. Production was temporarily suspended from 1943 to 1949 due to World War II and again from 1965 to 1967 due to a coin shortage. Proof Set production resumed in 1968 at the San Francisco Mint. All modern proof sets are stuck in San Francisco, although some single proof coins have been recently stuck at the new West Point Mint.

Starting in 1992 the Mint began offering silver proof sets in addition the the regular proof sets. The composition of the dime, quarter, and half dollar in these silver sets is the same as coinage prior to 1965. The outer packaging for the silver proof sets (1992-1998) is black with silver embossing. The 1999 to 2008 silver proof sets will have red and white packaging.

Key to abbreviations used on this page:

sd (Small Date): Refers to the size of the date on the Cent piece.

3PC (Three Piece): A special 1776-1976, Bicentennial three coin set produced at the San Francisco Mint. The coins in this set are 40% Silver.

SLVR (Silver): Sets dated 1992 to 2000 are offered two ways: Regular and Silver. The Dimes, Quarters, and Halves in the sets labeled SLVR are 90% Silver.

T1 and T2: The 1979 Type 1 Dollar has a "filled S" which was hard to read. The die was re-cut creating the Type 2 or "clear S." Similarly, in 1981, the die for the Dollar was re-cut creating a Type 1 (filled S) and a Type 2 (clear S).
