Grading Flying Eagle and Indian Cents: Grading Standards for Flying Eagle and Indian Cents from good to extra fine.

The History of the Flying Eagle Cent (1856-1858):

By 1857 the cost of striking and distributing Large Cents (1793-1857) has risen to the point that the U.S. Treasury abandoned production of the Large Cent, and the Half Cent, in favor of the Small Cent. The first Small Cent officially issued for circulation was the 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. Although approximately 1,500 1856 Flying Eagle Cents were struck at the Philadelphia Mint the year before, they were made as patterns to show Congress how the new cent would look and as proof editions offered for sale to collectors at a premium.

These new Small Cents were quickly accepted by the public who had all but stopped using the heavier Large Cents. The Act of February 21, 1857 which made Small Cents possible was also important because, by its terms, Spanish coins could be exchanged and melted at the mint in exchange for the new Small Cents. The public would no longer have to convert reals, medios, shillings, bits or pennies. The decimal system became both popular and official thereafter, although many people to this day still incorrectly refer to the cent as a penny!

The Flying Eagle Cent was designed by James B. Longacre. The coin has a weight of 4.67 grams, a diameter of 19mm, an a plain rim. The Flying Eagle Cent are 88% copper and 12% nickel which gives them a light color. Common nicknames for the Flying Eagle Cent were 'white cent', because of its color, and 'nickel cent' or 'nick', stemming from their composition (remember, the first five cent piece to be called a nickel was ten years later in 1866!). All specimens were struck in Philadelphia.

The History of the Indian Cent (1859-1909):

The first Indian Cent was issued in 1859. The image on the obverse is however not an actual Indian! It is, in fact, Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. The reverse of the 1859 depicted a laurel wreath around the words 'one cent'. This design was changed the next year to an oak wreath and shield with the same text.

The Indian Cent was designed by James B. Longacre. The coin has a weight of 4.67 grams, a diameter of 19mm, an a plain rim. From 1859 to the middle of 1964 the Indian Cent were 88% copper and 12% nickel which gave them a light color, same as the Flying Eagle Cent. From midway through 1864 to 1909 the composition was changed that of Bronze: 95% Copper and a 5% alloy of Zinc and Tin. Like the Flying Eagle, the early Indian Cent was sometimes called a 'white cent', because of its color, and 'nickel cent' or 'nick', stemming from their composition (remember, the first five cent piece to be called a nickel was seven years later in 1866!). All specimens were struck in Philadelphia except for the last two years, 1908 and 1909, which were minted in both Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Key to abbreviations used on this page:

LL / SL (Large Letters / Small Letters): These are terms used to distinguish the two varieties of 1858 Flying Eagle Cents. The Large Letter design shows the seraphs of the A and M in "AMERICA" touching at the bottom while the Small Letter design show the the A and M clearly separated.

CN / BR (Copper Nickel / Bronze): In 1864 the composition of the Indian Cents was changed from Copper Nickel to Bronze.

L (Longacre): In 1864 the obverse of the Indian Cent was redesigned slightly to sharpen the portrait. The designers initial 'L' for Longacre was added on the lower ribbon behind the neck. This was done late in 1864 and was kept until 1909.

S (San Francisco): The 'S' mint mark is located on the reverse just below the bow. Some Indian Cents were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1908 and 1909. Coins struck in Philadelphia bear no mint mark.
