Uncirculated Coin Sets are packaged by the government for sale to collectors. They contain uncirculated specimens of each years coins for every denomination issued from each mint Unlike Proof Sets, these are normal business strikes intended for circulation, and are not minted with any special consideration for quality. Proof Only issues are not included in Uncirculated Sets.
The packaging of Uncirculated Coin Sets varies depending on the year of issue. The official sets sold by the Treasury from 1947 to 1958 contained two examples of each regular issue coin packaged in cardboard holders which offered little protection from tarnishing, etc. Mint set prices from 1947 to 1958 are quoted on request. Since 1959, Uncirculated Coin Sets have been sealed in cellophane holders enclosed in a paper envelope.
Due to a coin shortage in the mid-sixties, Uncirculated Coin Sets were not produced from 1965 to 1967. Special Mint Sets, slightly higher quality that the standard Uncirculated Coin Sets, were produced to replace Proof Sets which were also not produced during this three year span. While the 1965 Special Mint Sets were packaged in cellophane, the 1966 and 1967 sets were offered in a hard plastic holder surrounded by a blue sleeve. Uncirculated Coin Sets were also not produced by the Treasury in 1950, 1982, or 1983. Be aware that any sets offered for sale from these years are not official Uncirculated Coin Sets.
Some collectors (and dealers) incorrectly refer to Uncirculated Coin Sets as 'mint sets'. This nickname is a misnomer as any set of coins issued by the United States Mint is technically a mint set...including Proof Sets, Prestige Sets, etc.
SD (Small Date): Refers to the size of the date on the Cent piece.
SMS (Special Mint Set): Made 1965-1967 at the Philadelphia Mint. No Proof Sets or typical Uncirculated Sets were produced these years.
3PC (Three Piece): A special 1776-1976, Bicentennial three coin set produced at the San Francisco Mint. The coins in this set are 40% Silver.
