GRADING BARBER DIMES Grading Standards for Barber Dimes from good to very fine.
The first Barber Dime was issued in 1892. The obverse depicted the profile bust of Liberty wearing a cap and laurel wreath. The reverse design was a wreath of leaves and corn stalks surrounding the denomination. These ten cent pieces were also called Liberty Head Dimes. Since, however, the head of Liberty has appeared on five different types of U.S. dimes over the years, the term Barber Dime is officially used to describe this type of 1892-1916.
The Barber Dime was designed by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. His same design was also used for the quarter and half dollars (1892-1916). His initial 'B' appears on the obverse at the truncation of Liberty's neck
The Barber Dime was composed of 90% Silver and 10% Copper. Since pure silver is very soft, copper was added to all circulating silver coins to harden them and prevent excessive wear. Barber Dimes had a weight of 2.50 grams, a diameter of 17.9mm, a reeded edge. The edges of most silver coins were reeded to make evident any attempt to shave silver off the coin.
O (New Orleans): The 'O' mint mark is located on the reverse below the wreath's bow.
D (Denver): The 'D' mint mark is located on the reverse below the wreath's bow.
S (San Francisco): The 'S' mint mark is located on the reverse below the wreath's bow.
Note: Barber Dimes struck in Philadelphia bear no mint mark.
